    Get free school supplies, haircuts, shoes, socks

    CANTON − A Back to School Bash will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Local 94 Plumbers & Pipefitters event center, 3919 13th St. SW.

    Under the Sun tanning salon and local nonprofit Shoes 4 U will provide haircuts, lunch, school supplies, shoes and socks for free. Donations are welcome. For more information, contact Under the Sun at underthesuntan@gmail.com.

    Vagotis elected Stark Bar Association president

    CANTON – Attorney Angela T. Vagotis recently was sworn in as president of the 700-member Stark County Bar Association during its installation luncheon. Vagotis became the 107th president when her one-year term began July 1.

    Also sworn in were officers: First Vice-President Beverly Proctor-Donald; Second Vice President Andrea M. Scassa; Secretary Jonathan E. Morris; and Treasurer Gust Callas.

    Vagotis has been in private practice since 1992. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Bowling Green State University and her law degree from the University of Akron. Vagotis has held several leadership positions at the Stark County Bar Association, including first vice president, second vice president and secretary, co-chaired the Notary Public Committee and chaired the Grievance Committee.

    Kids movies Monday, Wednesday

    CANTON – The Summer Kids Movie Series continues at 1 p.m. Monday at the Canton Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, with a showing of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” Admission is $2. Doors and the box office open at noon. A sensory-friendly showing of the movie will be at 6:30 p.m.

    The Centennial Plaza Movie Series continues at 7 p.m. Wednesday with a showing of “The Wizard of Oz” outdoors at Centennial Plaza, 330 Court Ave. NW. Admission is free. The movie will be shown rain or shine. In case of severe weather, the movie will be canceled. The Centennial Plaza Movie Series shows family-friendly movies at 7 p.m. each Wednesday through Aug. 14.

    Uniontown Lions Club Festival is Aug. 14-17

    HARTVILLE – The Uniontown Lions Club is sponsoring its 29th annual festival to raise funds to support various community service and outreach programs. This year’s Lions Festival will be Aug. 14-17 on the grounds at the HRM Complex adjacent to the Hartville Marketplace.

    The festival theme is “Uniontown Lions, Serving our Community.” All are invited. There will be food, rides, games, bingo, 50/50 drawings and entertainment nightly.

    The grand marshal is Kelli Viscounte, founder and president of Love Our Community, a local nonprofit that provides care and resources for people/families in need.

    Festival highlights are as follows:

    • Aug. 15 — festival opens at 5 p.m.; hymn sing with local churches from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m.; Aaron Stanley (rock, pop and country) performs from 8:45 to 10 p.m.
    • Aug. 16 — car show from 4 to 8 p.m.; festival opens at 5 p.m.; Better Monday (soft rock music) performs from 7 to 10:15 p.m.
    • Aug. 17 — parade starts at 5 p.m.; festival opens after parade; Lake High School Band performs at 7 p.m., Gerald Harris the Entertainer plays jazz, oldies and Motown from 9 to 10:15 p.m.; fireworks at 10:30 p.m.

    Get free school supplies

    JACKSON TWP. – Jackson Bear Hugs will have a back-to-school supplies party from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson High School. All are welcome at this free family event.

    Timken Foundation awards $1.5M grant to Stark State College

    JACKSON TWP. – The Timken Foundation has awarded Stark State College a $1.5 million grant to support building infrastructure and classroom technology upgrades at the college’s W.R. Timken Center for Information Technology.

    Opened in 2004 with support from the Timken Foundation, the 44,000-square-foot Timken Center is home to Stark State’s engineering technology and information technology programs. The funds also will be used to buy more than 400 new classroom computers for the center.

    Fun Fest is Saturday

    MASSILLON – Fun Fest will be 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the Massillon Museum lawn (121 Lincoln Way E), Duncan Plaza, and First Street SE.

    Admission to the family-focused festival is free. Most activities are free; a few require a minimal charge. Nearly 90 local social service agencies, civic groups, law enforcement agencies, churches, arts organizations and businesses will set up games, art projects, activities and health and safety information stations.

    Live music, dance, gymnastics and other entertainment will fill the Duncan Plaza stage throughout the event. Families can visit the Massillon Museum galleries, which will be open with no admission fee during and after Fun Fest.

    Among the special attractions will be inflatables, balloon sculptures by clowns Philbe and Bertha, Divine Harmony stilt walkers, Mad Science, ballroom dancing, Akron Children’s Museum Monster Mission, Akron Zoo, Ohio State University’s Bugmobile, EN-RICH-MENT Drummers, Tiger majorettes and Tiger Swing Band Drum Line, costumed characters and princesses, and a live wildlife display.

    The Touch-a-Truck segment of Fun Fest in the municipal parking lot will feature a firetruck, law enforcement vehicles and tow trucks, among many others. Krackpots Comedy Club (14 Lincoln Way W) will present a free family-friendly comedy show at 2 p.m.

    History Discussion Group to talk about jobs

    MASSILLON – The Massillon Museum’s History Discussion Group will talk about interesting and unusual jobs from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday in the museum’s Fred F. Silk Community Room, 121 Lincoln Way E. Museum Archivist Mandy Altimus Stahl will moderate.

    Sonny & Cher tribute show Aug. 11

    MASSILLON – The Lions Lincoln Theatre, 156 Lincoln Way E, will present The Sonny & Cher Tribute Show - The Beat Goes On from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 11.

    Library plans programs on historic buildings, online privacy

    • Historic Buildings of Massillon will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday in the main auditorium, 208 Lincoln Way E. Mandy Altimus Stahl, archivist at the Massillon Museum, will be the presenter. Registration is required.
    • Online Privacy 101 will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Massillon Public Library’s Askren Branch, 1200 Market St. NE, Navarre.     Free concert at park Thursday

    PIKE TWP. − A harp and flute duet from the Canton Symphony Orchestra will perform a free concert from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fry Family Park, 2533 Farber St. SE. The event is part of Stark Parks’ and the Canton Symphony Orchestra’s Summer Serenades in the Park. All are welcome.
