Watch: Flooded roads reported in Lincoln & Turner Counties

LINCOLN COUNTY, S.D. (KELO) — Several roads in Lincoln and Turner Counties and the surrounding area are under water.

According to Lincoln County Emergency Management (LCEM) Coordinator Harold Timmerman, township, county and DOT personnel cannot get barricades to all areas to warn motorists of flooded roads.

People should limit travelling in Lincoln and Turner Counties and to not drive through flooded areas.

KELOLAND’s Brian Karstens and Darcy Andersen captured many of these photos and videos when arriving home in Lincoln and Turner Counties respectively.

As of 8:00 p.m. Thursday, “Hwy. 18 west of Canton is down to one lane, but the one lane is only on the shoulder of the road,” Karstens said.

He reported water is flowing out of a farmer’s field, into the Canton football field and the west end of Canton High School. Water is getting into houses north of the courthouse and many people are helping sandbag.

With the excessive rainfall in southeast South Dakota flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas, according to the National Weather Service. Area creeks and rivers could flood with additional rain we are projected to receive.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety suggests Turn Around Don’t Drown: if you are walking, it only takes six inches of water to knock you off your feet. Don’t pursue to walk, swim or drive through moving water. Try to get to higher ground if possible.

If you are driving and you see water over the road, don’t drive through it. Turn around and find an alternate, safer route. Twelve inches of water can carry away a vehicle. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Ready.gov warns never to drive around barricades. They are used to alert and safely direct traffic out of flooded areas.

Stay off bridges if fast-moving water is underneath, as the water can wash away bridges without any warning.

If your car gets trapped in rapidly moving water stay inside it. If the water is rising inside the car, get on the roof.
