San Jose homicide suspect who fled to El Salvador back in Bay Area after Texas arrest
The suspect in a 2022 fatal shooting in San Jose who fled to El Salvador was returned to the Bay Area after his arrest in Texas in May, police said Friday.The shooting happened on the afternoon of November 18, 2022 on the 600 block of River Oaks Parkway in North San Jose. San Jose police said officers found a man who had been shot and he was treated at the scene before being taken to a hospital where he later died of his injuries.During the investigation, detectives identified 30-year-old Carlos Hernandez Monroy as the suspect. Police said it was also determined that Hernandez Monroy had fled to El Salvador after the shooting.On May 27, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested Hernandez Monroy in McAllen, Texas. He was brought back to San Jose on Monday and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for murder.Police said the motive and circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting were still under investigation. Federal grand jury charges short seller Andrew Left in $16M stock manipulation scheme
A federal grand jury in California has charged short seller Andrew Left with multiple counts of securities fraud for a $16 million stock market manipulation scheme. The Department of Justice said in a statement on Friday that Left, who was a securities analyst, trader, and guest commentator on television channels including CNBC and Fox Business, is charged with one count of engaging in a securities fraud scheme, 17 counts of securities fraud, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators. As a short seller, Left would make money betting stocks would fall. The Justice Department said that Left conducted business under the name Citron Research, which had a website that published investment recommendations. He published research on companies ranging from Tesla and GameStop to Grand Canyon Education and Peloton. If convicted, Left faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison on the securities fraud scheme count, 20 years in prison on each securities fraud count, and five years in prison on the false statements count.

Person charged with firebombing UC Berkeley police car pleads not guilty
Casey R. Goonan, the Pleasant Hill resident suspected in a series of arsons at UC Berkeley, has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. Goonan, 34, was initially charged with a single count of using fire or explosives to damage the property of an institution receiving federal aid. A federal grand jury has since returned an indictment against Goonan adding one count each of possession of an unregistered firearm and using fire or explosives to damage property used in, or affecting, interstate commerce, court records show.
