A Cape Coral man faces several charges linked to last week's Three Oaks Parkway shooting death, Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno announced Monday.

Khylil Draine, 25, remained in custody Monday afternoon without bond set. He was taken into custody Sunday morning.

Draine faces charges of second-degree murder; shooting into a vehicle; armed robbery; and probation violation. Jail records indicate he was released Sept. 17, 2021, on charges of aggravated battery and aggravated assault.

"This criminal took the life of a young father for a bag of weed," Marceno said during a press conference Monday. "I've always told you — people rob, steal and kill for drugs."

Marceno said Draine used a 9 mm pistol. He also confirmed Draine and the victim knew each other.

The sheriff said that within minutes of the shooting, authorities had identified Draine as the perpetrator.

Marceno said the victim was shot in the head, heart and the lungs.

While the crime scene perimeter was removed Thursday, Lee County deputies remained on scene at least through Friday evening.

"Simultaneously as the detectives are out there, they're utilizing different programs to not only do the crime scene, but now to analyze all different aspects of the investigation," Marceno said.

Draine is next due in court July 29 for his arraignment. Assistant State Attorney Andreas Gardiner on Monday filed a motion that asks that he be held without bond. The hearing will happen Wednesday morning.

"As of today we have six homicides," Marceno had said of the county's numbers so far this year. "All six homicides, solved 100%."

    Growing memorial for the victim

The community has started a memorial at the site where the victim, who was shot in an SUV, came to rest.

"We will always have you in our heart," reads a note placed by the memorial site. "You were a great father, son, grandson, brother, nephew, fiance, cousin. We will always love you."
