LINCOLN COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) is looking into a shooting on Saturday.

The shooting took place near US 380, and officials said the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office was involved.

NMSP stated the incident started around 12:55 p.m. when a shoplifting crime was reported at the Family Dollar in Capitan. Victor Herrera, 22, and Maggie Mondragon, 25, are accused of shoplifting items and being in a stolen truck. LCSO deputies tried to make a traffic stop, but the truck fled and pulled over on Highway 380. Herrera and Mondragon allegedly fled from the vehicle on foot. Mondragon was caught, but Herrera was not.

After escaping, Herrera is accused of stealing a truck. Authorities found him, and spike strips were set up. He reportedly drove around them, and a deputy fired at least one round from his duty weapon.

NMSP was called to the scene to help with the stolen truck, and they used a PIT maneuver to stop him. He was taken into custody and treated for minor injuries.

No officers were harmed, and Herrera was charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and aggravated fleeing.
