Photo story: County celebrates the Fourth
Thousands of people lined the main streets of Watsonville and Aptos Thursday to watch the parades that have become a tradition stretching back decades. The Spirit of Watsonville parade kicked off at noon, two hours after the Worlds Shortest Parade, which takes place in Aptos on Soquel Avenue in Mid-County.
Aptos’ ‘World’s Shortest Parade’ celebrates its 63rd year
A warm Thursday morning brought out hundreds of spectators and participants to the World’s Shortest Parade in Aptos for Independence Day, 2024. As usual, hundreds of celebrants watched the homegrown parade amble down Soquel Drive in Aptos, from State Park Avenue into Aptos Village, bringing smiles, cheers and the usual festive atmosphere.

Independence Day’s scorching weekend appears to be bleeding into the following days, as temperatures look to stay elevated throughout most, if not all, of next week. As per usual, how hot it will be for you depends on where you are in the county. In any event, it will be hot, though. Lower elevation areas like the cities of Santa Cruz and Capitola are likely to see highs between the mid-80s and low-90s over the next seven days, while Scotts Valley residents can expect highs in the high-80s to mid-90s. The mountain communities will bear the brunt of the heat, with highs in the mid-90s to low-100s over the next seven days.

Policyholder of California Fair Plan pays more after living in a fire danger zone
Boulder Creek, Calif. (KION-TV) -- A Boulder Creek resident named Don Baker switched over to another insurance company and became a policyholder of the California Fair Plan last year. He had to make two seperate payments this year and was forced to pay more on a down payment. Instead of paying in installments like last year Baker had to pay for the entire year.
Red flag warning issued for Santa Cruz Mountains through Friday
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. — A red flag warning has been issued for the Santa Cruz mountains until Friday due to the combination of the heat and extremely dry vegetation. Lamont Bain, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, says the dryness of the vegetation is approaching uncharted territory in the area.

San Lorenzo Valley Water District Advances Ambitious Effort to Replace 12 Aging Water Tanks
JULY 2, 2024 — BOULDER CREEK, CA — The San Lorenzo Valley Water District (SLVWD) today announced it is moving forward to replace 12 water tanks to improve reliability, capacity and drought resiliency. The tanks to be replaced include older, wooden tanks made of redwood, as well as plastic tanks that were damaged in the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire. The old tanks will be replaced by 6 new 120,000 gallon bolted-steel tanks, greatly increasing system reliability and water storage.
