Wayne County wins its first ever state championship

Wahine Classic all-girls surf competition set for Aug. 3-4
WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. (WECT) - The Wahine Classic all-girls surf competition will take place Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3-4, according to an announcement from organizers. “The Wahine Classic Surfing Competition in Wrightsville Beach began in the summer of 2013,” the event website states. “The event is one of the only all-female surfing competitions on the East Coast and it continues to grow each year, attracting both amateur and pro surfers. Jo Pickett, a legendary surfing instructor with over 20 years of experience and the owner of Crystal South Surf Camp, is the event’s organizer.”

Swimming advisory issued for section of beach in Oak Island
OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — The state has advised beachgoers to be aware of the floodwaters being pumped to the ocean surf in Oak Island. Recent rains caused flooding of streets, yards, and housing in parts of Oak Island and nearby communities. According to a news release, to minimize the flooding damage and to ensure roads are accessible for emergency vehicles, the town has pumped floodwater into the ocean near Crowell Street. Surfers and swimmers should avoid these sites.
Sport City Rec holds Social Olympics at Hi-Wire Brewing
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Not every athlete was able to make it to the Olympics in Paris, but one local sports league was able to give some residents something to compete for. Sport City Rec hosted its Social Olympics at Hi-Wire Brewing on Saturday. Dozens of teams competed in several different games such as balloon toss, cornhole, beer pong and more. Sport City Rec is a recreational sports league that aims to connect people through sports in a social environment. Teams were judged on their performance and how fast they were able to complete certain games.
