A 911 call and computer dispatch record provide more details in a Carolina Beach stabbing on July 4th.

Carolina Beach police were dispatched to the 600 block of Spencer Farlow Drive at 7:40 a.m. on July 4th in response to a "person down" call for service, according to a prior news release from the town of Carolina Beach. Officers observed a deceased victim, identified as 28-year-old Dakota Ryan Capes of Carolina Beach, with apparent stab wound injuries.

One suspect, 41-year-old James Arthur Johnson, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing. Charging text included in a magistrate's order issued for Johnson on July 4th states that "the defendant unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did of malice aforethought kill and murder Dakota Ryan Capes."

Audio from a 911 call provides insight into what took place outside of a Carolina Beach property.

"I need an ambulance and police," the caller said. "I just got home from work, there is someone in the entrance of my doorway and there is blood everywhere."

The caller was unable to identify the gender of the victim, whether the victim was awake, and whether the victim was breathing when asked by the 911 call operator.

"I saw some guy leaving my place," the caller said. "He was covered in tattoos; he was covered in blood. I heard yelling and screaming as I was getting out of my car. I started coming up the stairs and I don't know these people."

The caller said the suspect left the scene on foot in the direction of the bridge.

"He had blood on him, and I just looked at him and he walked by me and then when I walked up to my place, I noticed that there was blood all over my door," the caller said.

The call concludes after approximately five minutes and 40 seconds when a police officer arrives on scene. The 911 operator said that police, fire, and emergency medical services personnel were dispatched to the scene.

Computer dispatch records indicate that a law enforcement officer had "eyes on the subject," identified as "middle aged (with) tattoos on (the) face, dark hair, black shirt, black sweatpants," walking towards the bridge at 8:06 a.m. The suspect is said to be in custody by 8:10 a.m.

The suspect had been charged with second degree murder by 3:48 p.m., according to the computer dispatch record.

As of Wednesday, Johnson was being held in the New Hanover County Jail under a $1 million secured bond, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office inmate search.
