Man jet skiing across Lake Michigan to raise money for body armor for Chicago police
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Most Chicagoans who want to go to Saugatuck travel by car, but one man left Chicago for southwest Michigan on a jet ski.Frank Giannelli is jet skiing 100 miles across Lake Michigan for "Get Behind The Vest," the effort by the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation to raise money to provide life-saving body armor to police officers.Giannelli zipped off from the Chicago Yacht Club around 7:15 a.m. Thursday, getting a water salute as he moved out of port. This journey has been a year in the making."I actually bought my jet ski about a year ago, and the two ideas came together, and there it was," he said. "I've been riding my bike, hitting the gym. It's a little harder on the legs, the up and down, but that's really the conditioning. I started conditioning about two months ago."Giannelli should be arriving in Saugatuck by late Thursday morning. To donate, head to thinbluecrossing.org.

Fewer Americans file for jobless claims as applications remain at elevated, but not troubling levels
Fewer Americans filed for unemployment benefits last week, but applications remained at recently elevated, though not troubling levels. Jobless claims for the week ending July 20 fell by 10,000 to 235,000 from 245,000 the previous week, the Labor Department reported Thursday. It’s the ninth straight week claims came in above 220,000. Before that stretch, claims had been below that number in all but three weeks so far in 2024. Weekly unemployment claims are widely considered as representative of layoffs, and though they have been slightly higher the past couple of months, they remain at historically healthy levels. The total number of Americans collecting unemployment benefits fell for the second time in three weeks. About 1.85 million Americans were collecting jobless benefits for the week of July 13, around 9,000 fewer than the previous week.
