Iowa mother, father accused of leaving 4-year-old with relatives, telling them to keep child in 'makeshift cage'
An Iowa mother and father were arrested for neglect and abandonment of a dependent person and child endangerment after a 4-year-old was found in "a mixture of both human and animal feces," according to Fremont County deputies. On Thursday, deputies found the 4-year-old inside of a residence in Hamburg, Iowa.
Sidney Rodeo rolls into town for 101st time
(Sidney) -- A tradition more than a century long returns to Sidney next week. The 101st Annual Sidney Iowa Rodeo takes place July 30th through August 3rd at the rodeo grounds on the west side of Sidney. From mutton busting to bullfighting, the rodeo brings an array of family-friendly fun. Jann and Lyle Tackett joined the KMA "Morning Show" recently to preview this year's rendition. The planning department meeting was attended by board members Ronald Bucher, Ryan Kuehl and acting chair Ann O’Connor. Absent were Brian Kruse and David Levy. The board addressed two main cases. Olsson, an engineering and design firm, appealed a denial by Omaha Public Works of its site plan for the Immigrant Legal Center at 42nd and Center streets. The discussions focused on the location of driveways, with Olsson advocating for the removal of a driveway on 42nd Street and Public Works suggesting adjustments to accommodate new construction. The board voted 3-0 to deny Olsson’s appeal. In the second case, Allen Natowski appealed a nuisance notice issued by the Omaha Police Department for a property in South Omaha. Natowski explained that the property was owned by his parents, with efforts underway to clean it up. The board denied the appeal but granted a 60-day extension before issuing a citation.

Iowa Zoo Facing Cruelty Allegations After the Death of a Shark
An Iowa aquarium is facing calls to shut down after it euthanized a shark that bit an employee this week. The Des Moines Register reports that Blue Zoo, a for-profit aquarium, opened in May in the Villages at Jordan Creek Town Center. The euthanized shark is reportedly the second animal to die at the facility since it opened, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The Register reports that the Humane Society of the United States is calling for an investigation and for Blue Zoo to close.
West Nile Has Been Found in Iowa Mosquitoes
The good news is that at the time of writing, no humans in Iowa have yet tested positive for the West Nile virus. Mosquitos on the other hand have been found containing the virus in central Iowa. According to KCRG, mosquitoes were trapped at a park in West Ames sometime in mid-July. The park where these mosquitoes were found is sprayed or fogged every Wednesday night. Some of these mosquitoes contained the West Nile virus.
