PITTSBURG, KS – Head coach Bob Fornelli and Pitt State baseball have now transitioned to the summer season after a spring on the diamond.

After welcoming several young athletes to campus last week, the Gorillas would host some of the top talent in high school on Tuesday. Around 40 athletes from grades 9-12 worked with coach Fornelli and his players at the ballpark.

Kids from several different states including Illinois, Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma would participate. The group would begin the day with a pro-style workout, and end with a scrimmage. The game would include five hitters per inning, for a total of 12 inning of play, which allowed everyone a turn.

Blayne Lilienkamp. a junior from Carthage High School, said the camp provides a great ability for him to meet with the coaches.

“I’m just trying to meet the players, and get to know the area a bit,” said Lilienkamp.

“It’s a good opportunity to talk with the coaching staff, see the facility, and see what the coaching style is like. It’s all about having fun and getting better at baseball.”

Pitt State head baseball coach Bob Fornelli also said the camp provides an opportunity for the players to meet with coaches, but also learning about the collegiate program.

“I think it’s huge for kids to get out and see different places. Not only do they get to learn about the program itself, but they also get to learn about other programs in attendance,” said Fornelli.

“Every day you play, there’s somebody there to watch you. You might not know who they are, but they’re up in the stands watching your coach and your team. We’re all visiting and talking about different players, it’s just a big community of baseball.”

The camp would take place from 11 a.m. to around 3:30 p.m. A second camp will be held for the prospect in August.
