    Carthage roundabout taking shape near Mercy Hospital

    CARTHAGE, Mo. (KOAM) — Now underway for two months the new Carthage roundabout near Mercy Hospital is taking shape.

    “Combine the intersections of Jasper County Route HH (Fir Road) with Dr. Russell Smith Way (Southwest Outer Road) and the I-49 southbound ramps into a single lane roundabout.”

    The $1.3 million cost is shared by MoDOT and the City of Carthage.

    Within sight of the hospital this will improve the flow of traffic as Carthage continues to grow officials say. Additionally the traffic signal will be eliminated on the west side of I-49 and HH.

    There are two closely spaced intersections that need to be combined into one to improve safety and accommodate increased traffic from future development in the area .”

    Not only is Mercy Carthage nearby but the busy traffic coming and going from the Mercy Ambulance hub at 3111 Dr Russell Smith Way.

    MoDOT says there will be periodic road closures but access to Mercy will not be interrupted. The first phase of the project is complete as they built a south shoulder temporary access for Mercy Hospital.

    Also they are building up the interior triangle with rock and dirt that will become the real estate of the new single-lane roundabout.
