T he white Ocala, Florida, woman who shot and killed her neighbor, a Black mother of four who she had an ongoing dispute with, has been convicted of manslaughter and is awaiting sentencing now that her “I was in fear for my life” card has been revoked.

According to NewsOne , Susan Lorincz was convicted Friday of shooting and killing Ajike “AJ” Owens last year after declining to take the stand in her own defense the day prior.

Prosecutors finished presenting their case against Lorincz on Wednesday. For the most part, Prosecutors didn’t appear to need the 58-year-old’s testimony —they just needed to play back her own words in court.

    From NewsOne:

During testimony from Marion County Sheriff’s Office Detective Ryan Stith, prosecutors showed one of Susan Lorincz’s interviews with detectives to the jury, according to WCJB . In the video of the interview, Lorincz claimed that when Owens began to pound on the door, she feared for her life.

“[Owens] bangs so hard it looks like my door is going to come off and I panicked, and I was like oh my god she’s really going to kill me this time. So, I don’t remember actually picking up the gun. I just remember shooting,” Lorincz told the detective during her interrogation.

Prosecutors pushed back with testimony from Michael Stringer, a patrol deputy with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. When he was asked if he observed any weapons on Owens or near Owens, he said, “no,” according to ABC News .

For those who are unfamiliar with the case, Lorincz fired a gun through the closed front door of her home and killed Owens on June 2, 2023, after Owens had reportedly confronted her for calling her children racial slurs while shouting at them to get off of her property, an allegation Lorincz previously admitted to after initially denying. An arrest report stated Lorincz told deputies that she purchased two handguns one year ago after a previous confrontation with Owens. She also admitted to “possibly” researching Florida’s “stand your ground” and self-defense laws in the recent past—almost as if she was planning to kill someone in “self-defense.” The Marion County sheriff often portrayed the fatal shooting as the unfortunate result of an ongoing “feud” between neighbors and had even gone as far as to say both Owens and Lorincz displayed “a lot of aggressiveness” leading up to the shooting. But, according to neighbors, Owens and her children were hardly the only people in the neighborhood who had altercations with Lorincz, who residents said had been involved in an ongoing “feud” with damn near everyone and their children.

    From NBC News :

In interviews with NBC News, neighbors recalled the times they said the suspect recorded their children, taunted them with slurs, called the police and waved guns at them — just for being kids.

Hours before the shooting, Franklyn Colon was playing in a field with his son and other children when, he said, Lorincz stuck her middle finger up at him.

Colon, who added Owens was the first person to warn him about Lorincz when he moved to the neighborhood about two years ago, said the suspect started recording and screaming “all kinds of nonsense towards me, towards the kids, towards everyone else.”

Phyllis Wills, 33, has lived in the neighborhood for about 15 years. She knew Owens and knew of Lorincz “because she used to come outside all the time and harass our kids,” she said. “Everybody in this neighborhood has feuded with this lady over our children.”

She said Lorincz had a problem with children simply being children.

“Our kids used to play in the field over there all the time. It’s an apartment complex. These are children who, you know, they’re, they’re going to do things. … Every time they’ve went even in the patch of grass over there, she would be like, ‘Get off of my lawn, you b—- or you retards or you N-word.’ She would wave guns at them,” Wills said.

After Lorincz was convicted—because even the all-white jury that president over her case wasn’t dense enough to believe her life was in danger when she shot Owens through a closed and presumably locked door—a letter Lorincz wrote to Owens’ children was read aloud in court. Lorincz wrote in the letter that she was sorry for their loss and that she was truly in fear for her life. Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, was having none of that white nonsense.

During a press conference outside of the trial, Ajike Owens’ mother, Pamela Dias, pushed back saying that Lorincz had no regard for human life.

“[Lorincz] did kill my daughter; that in itself, is hurtful,” Dias said during a press conference outside of the courtroom. “But also the fact that one of [my grandchildren] could have been injured or killed as well is beyond any emotion or feeling that can truly be expressed. She has no regard for any form of human life, certainly not my family.”

Diaz insisted that Lorincz “set out to cause harm” and “set out to kill” her daughter.

According to CBS News , Lorincz faces up to 30 years in prison at sentencing.
