In 2021, Seaside Fire Chief Mary Gutierrez was tasked...

Julia Platt, Pacific Grove’s first woman mayor, made an indelible mark locally and in the world of science.
JULIA PLATT WAS FURIOUS. Mattie McDougall, the owner of the Lovers Point bathhouse concessions, had blocked public access to the beach, directly across the street from Platt’s Pacific Grove home. Platt would not have it. Access to the beach was a public right through a deed, she argued to the P.G. City Council, in a letter she sent in early January 1930. The city should tear down the barrier, no matter how many times McDougall replaced it.
Weekender: Kevin Morby’s Quarry mini-festival, Watsonville arts perking up and how to pronounce !!Con
The state-by-state roll call at the Democratic National Convention was certainly enlivened by brief musical salutes to each state, which was (mostly) pretty cool. California got Snoop, Dr. Dre, Tupac and Kendrick Lamar. Not to quibble, but I would have opened with Snoop, then a blast of Metallica, a ladle-full of Weezer, an Etta James chorus, a Los Lobos norteño riff, a bit of Go-Go’s bounce, a Tom Waits piano run, and whatever the heck Weird Al Yankovic wanted to contribute. But, alas, nobody asked me.
With retail theft legislation, Robert Rivas strives to chart a new path.
Legislation in the realm of criminal justice has a history in California of swinging back and forth like a pendulum, overcorrecting itself each time. Tough-on-crime gets too tough, locking people away; reformers go too far, allowing crime to get out of hand; and the cycle repeats. When a squadron of...
