A Warrior for Good: Joseph Tierney’s legacy – the Tierney Learning Center – now has a Boston Marathon Team!
Joe Tierney, a South Boston native, Boston City Councilor, and father of three, was a “Warrior for Good.” This mission of helping those in need propelled his life of service and lives on in the heart of the Tierney Learning Center, named in his memory in South Boston. Established in 2012, this important organization helps provide support services and resources to the residents of the Anne Lynch Homes at Old Colony, who need to learn, grow, and connect in a safe, caring, and welcoming environment, all at zero cost to the participants. The ultimate goal at the Tierney is to break the cycle of poverty and create a brighter future for all. This year, the journey continues by adding a new Boston Marathon Team to raise funds for this vital neighborhood center.

Spreading kindness in Southie: Chippewa Club Delivers Easter Baskets to residents of Marion Manor
The Chippewas were back at it, spreading kindness and joy in the neighborhood. On Saturday, members of the Southie Chippewa Club stopped by the Marion Manor Nursing Home in South Boston with Easter Baskets for the residents. During the weekly bingo game, Mark O’Leary, president of the Chippewa Club, along with John Dillon, Steve “Kuzzy” Kuzmich, Joe McDonough, Russell Waterman and Bobby Higgins. Also lending a helping hand, State Rep. David Biele and Brigid Nee Walsh.

Looks like changes are coming for Boston Public Schools. CBS Local is reporting that on Wednesday night, the school committee approved a $1.5 billion budget. Layoffs and consolidation of classrooms are expected, including the loss of eight classrooms at the Condon School. This is the most of any school in the city of Boston.

Councilor Flynn Calls for Hearing on Boston’s PILOT Program
BOSTON – Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn filed a hearing order this week calling for a review of the Payment In Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) Program in the City of Boston. The PILOT program was established to encourage large, tax-exempt, nonprofit institutions in Boston to make annual, voluntary cash contributions or community benefits due to basic city services provided by the city such as police, fire, and snow removal.

Mayor Wu Announces a New Season of Open Streets
Family-friendly, pedestrian-focused event is expanding to Hyde Park, in addition to existing five neighborhoods. BOSTON – Tuesday, March 26, 2024 – Mayor Michelle Wu today announced six Open Streets events, adding Hyde Park as an Open Streets location and beginning the popular car-free event series earlier in the year. Similar to years past, more than a mile will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic to create room for community and play. The half-day events will allow local businesses to expand into the street, and to safely make space for music, games, bicycling, community tabling, and more. This year, Open Streets will be in Dorchester, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, East Boston, and Allston-Brighton, with events throughout late spring, summer, and early fall. These pedestrian-focused events build on Mayor Wu’s commitment to reimagining our streets and making Boston the best city in the country for families.
