CORNELIUS, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — A Moldovan news website claims that Diana Cojocari, mother of missing girl Madalina Cojocari, has left the United States.

According to the website UniMedia , they claim a Facebook post, which has since been taken down, showed Diana Cojocari on a plane, with her mother sitting behind her.

The screenshot of the post, translated from Romanian, indicated that she was en route from New York, to Frankfurt, Germany, to Romania. The post noted that it was a “9-year absence from the country”, which may refer to her native Moldova.

Cojocari, who lived in Cornelius, pled guilty in Mecklenburg County Court earlier this year to failure to file a report on the disappearance of a child, stemming from the 2022 disappearance of her daughter, Madalina.

As of late June 2024, she was considered a suspect in her daughter’s disappearance, according to Cornelius Police.

Madalina Cojocari was last seen in public getting off a school bus, just before Thanksgiving 2022. She has not been seen since.

Diana Cojocari, along with her now-estranged husband Christopher Palmiter , were both accused of failing to file the missing persons report. A missing report was finally filed after Madalina’s school tried repeatedly to get in touch with both parents.

A report was ultimately filed three weeks after Madalina was last seen.

Cornelius Police have been actively investigating the case since.

Palmiter pled not guilty but was later co nvicted of the failure to report the charge. He received a suspended sentence. He has since filed for divorce from Diana Cojocari.

Diana Cojocari was sentenced to time served for the 17 months she was in the Mecklenburg County Detention Center.

Cojocari faced the possibility of being deported as a result of her conviction. It is not clear if Cojocari had her passport returned to her, or if she had filed for a replacement passport.

State evidence released during the Palmiter trial showed that Palmiter had asked Diana Cojocari about her daughter’s whereabouts after she was last seen, but he claimed he never received a specific answer.

The evidence released also showed several wire transfers to Diana’s mother, who lives in Eastern Europe.

Evidence also included what appeared to be voice memo recordings taken by Diana Cojocari having conversations with Palmiter, recorded after Madalina was last seen but before her being reported missing. Notes on the conversations by authorities noted that the conversations were ‘paranoid’, with repeated accusations and questions.

Palmiter said during the trial that Cojocari felt that “Russian entities”, including Vladimir Putin and the late singer Michael Jackson, were “watching” her. He additionally said Diana Cojocari had asked for him to hide her and her daughter somewhere.

Queen City News reached out to Cornelius Police for any further information related to Diana Cojocari’s departure. The department released this statement below.

The police department is aware of the posts that indicate Diana Cojocari may have left the country however we cannot confirm where exactly she went. None of her property was released and we are unable to prevent her from leaving the country. She does not currently have any active warrants for her arrest.
