Suspect accused of shooting at NC EMS, fire officials in custody: Sheriff

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A suspect is in custody after deputies say they fired shots at fire and EMS personnel Sunday morning.

Around 11:46 a.m., Rowan County Emergency Services, in collaboration with Atwell Fire Department, responded to a call from the intersection of Shinn Farm Road and Highway 152 regarding an unconscious person in a vehicle.

The subject was identified as Miguel Angel Ramirez. Upon arrival, paramedics determined that Ramirez was likely impaired rather than suffering from a medical condition.

While waiting for NC Highway Patrol, Ramirez allegedly brandished a handgun and fired a shot at paramedics.

One Rowan County parademic sustained an arm injury from a fall while taking cover. They were taken to the hospital for treatment and have since been released.

Deputies say Ramirez then stole a fire department pickup truck and drove away before colliding with another vehicle on Highway 152 and Unity Church Road.

Ramirez drove off-road across a field and into a nearby yard where he was apprehended by deputies.

Ramirez sustained minor injuries in the crash and the other driver was unharmed.

The gun — which officials say was stolen — was recovered by a Rowan County K9 in the field.

Ramirez has been charged with two counts of felony assault on firefighter/specified medical personnel with a firearm, felony larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm and driving while impaired.

He is currently being held at the Rowan County Detention Center under no bond.
