RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — The American Meteor Society received more than 100 reports about a fireball traveling over parts of the country early Friday morning, including North Carolina. One witness described seeing yellow sparks trailing a green fireball.

AMS said they received 138 reports about the fireball seen over Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

Glenn Sparks sent video he captured to CBS 17. He spotted it around 1:15 a.m. Friday in eastern Tennessee near Greenville, TN.

“It lit up the sky for over 10 seconds with multiple explosions along the way. Absolutely gorgeous!”, Sparks said.

CBS 17 Chief Meteorologist Wes Hohenstein saw the video, along with several others. He said, “The slow movement and reported sonic boom make it appear like it might have made it close to the ground and I wouldn’t be surprised if something is found on the ground somewhere.”

A majority of the sightings of this fireball meteor were on either side of the North Carolina – Tennessee border.

A witness in Waynesville, NC said, “This was the coolest and by far the biggest thing I have ever seen. I am amazed as this was a once in a lifetime experience.”

That person described the fireball appeared to be the size of a baseball from their perspective. They said it was blue-green in color and that it, “left a few streaks of sparkling flames kinda like a firework would except the whole thing happened in less than two seconds and other people around me down the street saw the same thing.”

Video from witnesses showed a fireball lighting up the sky as it traveled across the horizon. Click here to see more videos and witness accounts.

In June, a fireball was seen disintegrating over North Carolina. That one was said moving west of North at 32,000 miles per hour. It disintegrated over Roanoke Rapids Lake, just south of the North Carolina/Virginia border.
