BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — The Better Business Bureau of Birmingham is offering you a chance Friday to get rid of any unwanted sensitive documents instead of throwing them in the trash.

This is the fifth year of the event hosted by the BBB of Central and South Alabama.

Carl Bates is the president and CEO of the BBB in Birmingham. He said the BBB will take any personal paperwork you have in your house, shred it on site and recycle it. Bates said it’s the best way to protect your identity.

“Stealing your identity happens because these papers, if you throw them away, fall into the hands of the scammers, and then they start using them to build the dossier on you,” Bates said. “They steal your identity.”

It’s happening between Railroad Park and Regions Field on Friday from 9 a.m. until noon. It’s a free drive-thru event with a limit of 50 pounds of paper.
