The Department of Public Health issued an excessive heat warning for much of Los Angeles County Monday afternoon.From July 2 through Monday, July 8, 2024, officials recommend residents in the following areas take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses. Those at the greatest risk are older adults, younger children, people working outdoors, athletes, and people with a chronic medical condition that makes them sensitive to extreme heat. Man hospitalized, home destroyed after massive fire in Menifee
A man was hospitalized and a home destroyed when a massive fire broke out in Menifee early Monday morning. The blaze was first reported a little after 6 a.m. in the 24600 block of Conejo Drive, according to Riverside County Fire Department officials. Crews were dispatched to the scene, a single-story home, where they arrived to find the home engulfed in flames. The occupant of the home, an unidentified man, was able to escape but suffered some injuries that required hospitalization, firefighters said. It took crews nearly an hour to control the flames, which destroyed the home. They were able to prevent them from spreading to nearby structures. Three cars at the house were also damaged by the fire, crews noted. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
3 dead after shooting investigators believe was a double murder-suicide in Palm Springs
Police are investigating a shooting they believe to be a double murder-suicide in Palm Springs.The scene unfolded at around 1:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon, when police were dispatched to N. Indian Canyon Drive and Garnet Avenue for reports of a gunshot victim in the area, according to a statement from Palm Spring Police Department officials. They arrived and found a white sedan located in the intersection with two dead males inside, the statement said. Another man was found a short distance away, near the Indian Canyon Drive overpass of the 10 Freeway, with "self-inflicted injuries," police said. Neither the victims nor the alleged shooter have been identified. "There is no additional information leading us to believe there are outstanding suspects and it appears that the two scenes are related," the police statement said. As the investigation continues, detectives ask anyone with further details to contact them at (760) 778-8422.

Family of retired deputy who disappeared hiking in Greece concludes search
The brother of retired deputy Albert Calibet, who went missing while hiking in Greece, announced Monday that the family's search has ended."Despite our relentless efforts and determination, Albert remains missing," Calibet's brother Oliver wrote on the search's GoFundMe page. Calibet, 59, was last seen while hiking on the Greek island of Amorgos on June 11. Man hospitalized after car plunges more than 300 feet down ravine near Lake Mathews
A man was hospitalized after his car veered off a road and plunged more than 300 feet down a ravine near Lake Mathews in Riverside County on Monday. It happened just after 11 a.m., when the driver was heading along Cajalco Road, just east of Eagle Canyon Road, according to Riverside County Fire Department crews. They arrived to find the car about 350 feet down the hillside. The driver was able to get out of the car under his own power before walking back up to the road, firefighters said. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment on minor injuries. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash.

A man armed with a gun sleeping on a Metro bus in Glendale created a large police response as law enforcement worked to safely evacuate the bus, wake the man up, get him off the bus and into custody.Around 9:50 a.m., Glendale police got a call of a man on the bus with a firearm. Ventura deputies search for suspects who stole several guns from Camarillo Gun Store
Ventura County deputy sheriffs are searching for the suspects who burglarized a gun store in Camarillo early Monday morning, using a car to smash the store's glass front door to gain entry.The sheriff's department got the call around 4:20 a.m. of a car into Camarillo Gun Store on Ventura Boulevard.Senerey De Los Santos with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office said a stolen Blue Kia was used to back into the store and at least four to five masked suspects then went inside.She said two to three cases containing guns were smashed and several weapons were taken, however no ammunition or cash were stolen. Owners of the store were doing inventory Monday morning to determine exactly which guns were stolen and how many.The suspects then fled in a second vehicle, a silver sedan."We haven't had an incident like this in quite some time, so yeah this is a little bit shocking," De Los Santos said. She said detectives are currently going over surveillance footage to aid in the investigation.

Los Angeles City Metro bus vandalized during street takeover
A street takeover in downtown Los Angeles left a Metro bus vandalized with graffiti overnight. The bus with passengers onboard was approaching the intersection of 9th and West Olympic Boulevard around 3 a.m. on Monday when it was surrounded by people involved in a nearby street takeover. When police arrived at the scene, everyone involved scattered. There were reports of fireworks being set off and some buildings nearby also were tagged with graffiti during the takeover. LAPD said at least 50 vehicles were involved in the street takeover. No arrests were made. The incident remains under investigation as police gather evidence.

Crew of burglars seen celebrating jewelry heist in West Hollywood
Surveillance camera footage captured the moments that a burglary crew celebrated their score during a jewelry heist in West Hollywood in earlier June. According to owners of the Huener's Jewelry store, located in the 7900 block of Santa Monica Boulevard, they were hit on June 17, or Father's Day, when the group of burglars broke into the store at around 3 a.m. They say that the burglary lasted for more than 24 hours, during which time they cut open two safes and stole everything from inside. Video shows as the group of at least four high five and hug inside of the store as they ransack the inside of a safe. Owners say that the store's alarm system failed to send them any alerts about the burglary, and despite their requests the company has not yet provided a reason for the alleged malfunction. Despite the jewelry store owner's reports that both the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation are looking into the matter, both departments say they have not received any reports.
Large fire engulfs Downtown LA commercial building before being extinguished by firefighters
A massive fire engulfed a previously burnt commercial building in Downtown Los Angeles on Sunday before firefighters were able to control the flames. The five-thousand-square-foot two-story building, located at 1390 E. Newton Street, was already engulfed in flames by the time that Los Angeles Fire Department crews arrived a little before 8 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. It took more than 80 firefighters just under 50 minutes to control the blaze. "Extensive damage, due to multiple previous burns, will be evaluated by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety," LAFD officials said. "LAFD Heavy Equipment crews are on standby for possible demolition, in the event the structure is deemed unsafe."No injuries were reported.Investigators are working to determine what sparked the fire.
Deputies quickly respond to mayday call in Port of LA as boat takes on water
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies quickly responded to a mayday call in the Port of Los Angeles on Sunday as a boat started to take on water. The boat's captain issued the call as the boat began to sink in the early afternoon, to which LASD Special Enforcement Bureau Tactical Maritime crew members were dispatched. They arrived to find that several people, including some children, were on board. Crews were able to stabilize the boat with pumps before it was towed to port, deputies said. Man shot dead after argument outside of North Hollywood bakery
A man was killed when a fight escalated into a shooting outside of a bakery in North Hollywood on Sunday. It happened at around 12:50 p.m. in the 12400 block of Burbank Boulevard near Whitsett Avenue, according to Los Angeles Police Department investigators. Video from the scene shows that the shooting happened outside of Sam's Kosher Bakery.They say that the victim, a 52-year-old man, got into some sort of argument with a man in between 30 and 40 years old, which soon escalated into the shooting. He was pronounced dead on scene. He has not yet been identified. The suspect was arrested at the scene, police said. No further information was provided.
