Minnesota Twins' 2025 season will start with earliest Opening Day game ever
MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Twins will start their 2025 season with the earliest Opening Day in franchise history, the team announced Thursday.The Twins released their full 2025 schedule, with Opening Day set for Thursday, March 27 at Busch Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals. It will also mark the Twins' second ever Opening Day game against a National League team.The season opens with a six-game road trip before the Twins return to Target Field for the home opener on Thursday, April 3 against the Houston Astros. Minnesota wraps the season with six straight away games, too, from Sept. 23-28. To make up for it, there are two nine-game homestands from May 19-28 and Sept. 12-21.The Twins' full 2025 schedule is available online.Meanwhile, there are still plenty of games left on the 2024 schedule. As of Thursday afternoon, the Twins sit 4.5 games back of the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central.
World's best unicyclists battle for glory in Bemidji
BEMIDJI, Minn. — Hundreds of athletes, 12 days of fun and just one wheel. Unicon 21, the unicycling world convention and championships, is underway at Bemidji's Sanford Center. There's more to these competitions than just riding a unicycle. Some cyclists will compete artistically, some will face off in unicycle hockey or basketball games, and some competitions focus on speed. And if you aren't competing you can still enjoy the convention full of vendors, lessons and entertainment. Unicon 21 began on Sunday and runs through July 26.The event has been held before in places like South Korea and France.

New Twin Cities domestic violence shelter to allow pets
MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — The nonprofit Tubman broke ground on Wednesday night at Harriet's Haven for Pets in Maplewood.It's a first for the Twin Cities: a place dedicated to protecting Minnesotans from violence with a place for their pets, too. The space will be added on to its domestic violence shelter. Tubman says more than half of domestic violence survivors delay leaving abusive relationships because they're afraid their pets won't be safe. Now, those pets will be able to come with them. Minneapolis City Council approves new police contract containing historic raises

NTSB finishes investigation into Rochester hot air balloon crash
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Federal investigators say a pilot failed to maintain clearance from power lines and crashed while attempting to land a hot air balloon in Rochester earlier this year.Shortly before 7 p.m. on March 20, a hot air balloon with three people aboard crashed near U.S. Highway 63.The pilot had been trying to land the balloon in a field when the wind shifted and increased in speed, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.The report says the pilot attempted to abort the landing but failed and the balloon contacted power lines. The basket and balloon became disconnected, causing the basket to fall 20-30 feet to the ground.The ballon's contact resulted in an electrical arc, severing 12 of the 16 flying wires. The remaining wires failed in a manner consistent with overload, the NTSB says.A small fire broke out next to the basket, which firefighters were able to quickly extinguish.Investigators say there were no mechanical issues with the balloon.
