A shooting on Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland Saturday afternoon severely injured two people in a vehicle and led to the closure of all eastbound lanes for hours.

The California Highway Patrol said officers were advised at about 2:11 p.m. of the shooting on eastbound 580 near Seminary Avenue. The investigation determined that two people in a vehicle were struck by gunfire, the CHP said.

The victim driver arrived at a San Leandro hospital for treatment, and both victims were later taken to other hospitals capable of providing a higher level of care, the CHP said. Both victims suffered major injuries, and one victim's injuries were life-threatening.

All lanes of eastbound 580 were closed at about 3:08 p.m. and remained closed into the evening. Eastbound traffic was diverted at Seminary Avenue during the closure and because of the ensuing backup, traffic from southbound state Highway 13 was diverted onto westbound 580, away from the scene.

The highway closure lasted until about 10:14 p.m., the CHP said. The southbound SR-13 transition to eastbound 580 was also reopened and residual delays remained in the area.

There was no suspect information available.
