The Notre Dame Fighting Irish enter the 2024 season full of hope after posting a 10-3 record last year, which culminated in a dominant 40-8 victory over Oregon State in the Sun Bowl. The Fighting Irish will open the 2024 season with a showdown against Texas A&M at Kyle Field. Notre Dame was just 3-2 away from home last season, but head coach Marcus Freeman will use Notre Dame football fall practice to have his team ready to go on Aug. 31. However, Notre Dame will have to replace several key pieces from last year's Notre Dame football roster.
One of the key pieces Freeman will have to replace is at quarterback following the departure of Sam Hartman, who threw for 2,689 yards, 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions last season. Duke transfer Riley Leonard is expected to start and Notre Dame fans are hoping he can lead the Fighting Irish to a potentially groundbreaking season in 2024. The Fighting Irish suffered a major blow to its offensive line earlier in fall camp. Notre Dame announced on Monday, Aug. 5, that tackle Charles Jagusah would miss the 2024 season after suffering an upper body injury in practice. Jagusah, a top-50 recruit from the Class of 2023, was the projected starter at left tackle for Notre Dame, which lost first-team All-American Joe Alt to the NFL Draft.
Tosh Baker has been taking snaps at left tackle with the first unit following Jagusah's injury. True freshman Anthonie Knapp has been working with the second team, but he could push Baker for that starting role if he's able to get up to speed with the offensive scheme and continues to impress the coaching staff ahead of the opener against Texas A&M. The Fighting Irish will have to replace the production from running back Audric Estime, who rushed for 1,341 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. Notre Dame's running back room is stacked with talent, with the likes of Jeremiyah Love, Jadarian Price and Devyn Ford ready to lead the charge. Love is presumed to take over as the lead back after averaging 5.4 yards per carry and producing 462 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns as a freshman.
Price is also expected to be a full-go two years following an Achilles injury, while Ford has proven capable of being a productive running back. Ford rushed for six touchdowns in his first two seasons at Penn State and shown his unselfishness since joining the Fighting Irish. Ford switched to the defensive side of the football in Notre Dame football spring camp, but is now back at running back heading into the 2024 season.
