Alabama football is entering a new era this season, as head coach Kalen DeBoer took over following the retirement of Nick Saban. DeBoer led Washington to the national championship game last season and now will try to meet lofty expectations in Tuscaloosa. Alabama football fall practice is underway for the Crimson Tide, who are replacing several key players from last year's Alabama football roster. Quarterback Jalen Milroe provides experience for the offense, but he will have new skill players around him.
The team of insiders at Bama247 are providing on-the-ground updates on every development in fall camp, including insights from Matt Zenitz, John Talty and Mike Rodak, who have more than 25 years of experience covering the Crimson Tide. The trio has deep-rooted ties inside and around the Alabama community, and Talty wrote The Leadership Secrets of Nick Saban, a Wall Street Journal and Publishers Weekly bestseller.
Alabama lost its top two running backs from last season, as Jase McCellan left for the NFL and Roydell Williams entered the college football transfer portal. Offensive coordinator Nick Sheridan still has plenty of talent to work with heading into the 2024 season, though, as Justice Haynes and Jam Miller could form one of the conference's best duos. Haynes rushed 25 times for 168 yards and two touchdowns during his freshman season, while Miller had 41 carries for 201 yards and a score as a sophomore.
They are currently sitting atop the Alabama football depth chart, but the title of "starter" has not been drilled down yet. Freshmen Richard Young and Daniel Hill are both competing for playing time as well, making this an important fall camp for Alabama's running back room. The Crimson Tide are known for producing strong running backs, so all four of those players are worth keeping tabs on before the season begins. Another one of the Alabama football headlines surrounds the Crimson Tide's linebackers. Alabama has a long history of producing great linebackers, and the coaching staff needs strong seasons from their inside linebackers in 2024. Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbell are back after making 19 combined starts last season, with Lawson recording 67 tackles, three sacks and 21 pressures as a first-year starter.
Lawson is the leader of the defense heading into the season, wearing the green dot as the player who will receive radio communications from defensive coordinator Kane Wommack. The outside Wolf position is unknown, making it a key positional battle during fall camp. Quandarrius Robinson, Keanu Koht, Qua Russaw and Yhonzae Pierre are all being closely monitored in practice as they try to earn playing time ahead of the season opener.
