Under-the-radar Serie A transfers: Piotr Zielinski to Inter, star striker Artem Dovbyk to AS Roma and more

The 2024-25 Serie A season is about to start and most of the clubs have already made the signings and sales they needed, while others will look to improve their squads until the last day of the summer transfer window which will end on Aug. 30. Inter , the Serie A title holders, already completed their summer strategy before the transfer session started by signing two free agents, but let's take a closer look at the most important moves you might have missed so far.

Serie A kicks off this weekend as some of the world's biggest cups battle for the Scudetto, and you can catch the action all season long on Paramount+ , CBS Sports Golazo Network and CBS Sports Network .

Piotr Zielinski , Inter

Let's start, as already mentioned above, with the Serie A champions. Simone Inzaghi's Inter completed three signings this summer, but two of them were already done before the session started. One is former Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski, who after not extending his deal with the Azzurri, decided to join the current title holders and completes one of the best midfields around Europe. Zielinski will play alongside Hakan Calhanoglu , Nicolo Barella , Davide Frattesi , Kristjan Asllani and Henrikh Mkhitaryan . It will be difficult for coach Inzaghi to make the right rotations despite the number of games Inter will play this season ahead.

Nicolo Zaniolo, Atalanta

You probably forgot this one already. After one year, Zaniolo is back to the Italian Serie A after some disappointing spells at Galatasaray and Aston Villa, where he didn't show the best of his potential. Zaniolo, 25, wants to be back at his level under coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who is one of the best managers when it comes to reviving the apparently lost talent of some players, as it recently happened to Charles De Ketelaere and Gianluca Scamacca . Bergamo is the perfect place and environment to bring back Zaniolo at the level he used to be at AS Roma .

Pepe Reina , Como

Como are back in the Italian Serie A and there are already many expectations around their season, the first one under the Djarum era. The team coached by soccer legend Cesc Fabregas immediately made some surprising signings, such as former Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who came back to the Italian league, and former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender Raphael Varane, who joined as a free agent this summer as well. Same as Monza , Como made their comeback in the Italian Serie A not just to survive and avoid relegation, but to create something long-term for the future.

Andrea Colpani , Fiorentina

The former Monza midfielder was one of the best players of the past season and attracted interest of multiple clubs. At the end, Fiorentina were the side that pushed the most to sign him as they also appointed former Monza and Colpani's coach Raffaele Palladino as their new manager. Fiorentina started a new cycle this summer after losing two UEFA Conference League finals in a row under coach Vincenzo Italiano , who replaced Thiago Motta at Bologna . Colpani will be one of the faces of this new term.

Mehdi Taremi, Inter

We already mentioned Zielinski as one of the key signings for Inter, but the Nerazzurri also signed another free agent as former Porto star Mehdi Taremi joined Inzaghi's side after not extending his term with the Portuguese team. The Iranian striker, who scored 91 goals over the past five seasons at Porto, is called to make an impact as he will be replacing Alexis Sanchez and become a key striker after a great season of both Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram. However, Inter needed another striker that could play more and allow them rest when Inzaghi need to rotate his attacking line during the season.

Khephren Thuram, Juventus

Another Thuram will be playing Serie A soccer this season. After his father (Lilian) and his brother (Marcus), Khephren Thuram joined Juventus this summer from Lille. There are many expectations around both the French midfielder and Juventus, who started a revolution under new manager Thiago Motta who replaced Massimiliano Allegri after the Italian coach was fired a few hours after winning the Coppa Italia last season. Juventus made some key signings with Douglas Luiz coming from Aston Villa, and goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio from Monza and Thuram. Will they be enough to get closer to Inter this season?

Nuno Tavares, Lazio

The Biancocelesti had a difficult summer so far with multiple changes. Manager Igor Tudor left his role after three months when he replaced Maurizio Sarri on the Biancocelesti's bench, and former Verona boss Marco Baroni became the new head coach. Club legends Ciro Immobile, Felipe Anderson and Luis Alberto all left the team, and Lazio are trying to create a new cycle under Baroni. Nuno Tavares, who joined from Arsenal on loan, was probably the most interesting signing they made so far.

Strahinja Pavlovic , AC Milan

Another team, another revolution. The Rossoneri parted ways with coach Stefano Pioli and appointed former AS Roma and Lille manager Paulo Fonseca. The Italian giants made some new signings, such as Spanish striker Alvaro Morata who joined from Atletico de Madrid and Strahinja Pavlovic, who was signed from RB Salzburg. Alessandro Buongiorno , Napoli

Talking about big changes, Napoli decided to appoint Antonio Conte to start a new era after one of the most disappointing seasons of the past decade. Conte, who is still looking to understand what will happen to Victor Osimhen , demanded a new center back and the Italian side signed Alessandro Buongiorno from Torino , who was one of the best Italian defenders of the past season. Buongiorno will lead the defensive three-back line alongside captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Amir Rrahmani .

Artem Dovbyk, AS Roma

Daniele De Rossi's side made some impressive signings this summer, starting from Argentinian talent Matias Soule and most notably with former Girona striker Artem Dovbyk. The Ukrainian striker scored 24 goals in 36 games in the past season and was one of the reasons why Girona managed to make the historical Champions League qualification. AS Roma fans hope that he can make the some impact in the Italian Serie A, playing alongside a dream attacking trio formed by him, Soule and Paulo Dybala .
