The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press Top 25 ahead of the 2024 college football season. Notre Dame will have a tough test out of the gate as the Fighting Irish travel to Kyle Field to take on the No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday, Aug. 31. Notre Dame is coming off a 10-3 season that included a dominant 40-8 victory over Oregon State in the Sun Bowl. Head coach Marcus Freeman is entering his third full year with Notre Dame and the pressure is starting to build for him to produce a winning Notre Dame football roster.

Notre Dame hasn't appeared in the College Football Playoff since 2020, but the Fighting Irish have a shot at ending that drought now that the College Football Playoff will feature a 12-team playoff bracket for the 2024-25 season, expanding from the current four-team format. Notre Dame's 2024 football schedule only features two games versus teams that finished last year ranked, giving way for the Irish to make a deep run with a talented Notre Dame football depth chart. Top Notre Dame Fighting Irish practice storylines

The Fighting Irish suffered a major blow to its offensive line earlier in fall camp. Notre Dame announced on Monday, Aug. 5, that tackle Charles Jagusah would miss the 2024 season after suffering an upper body injury in practice. Jagusah, a top-50 recruit from the Class of 2023, was the projected starter at left tackle for Notre Dame, which lost first-team All-American Joe Alt to the NFL Draft.

Tosh Baker has been taking snaps at left tackle with the first unit following Jagusah's injury. True freshman Anthonie Knapp has been working with the second team, but he could push Baker for that starting role if he's able to get up to speed with the offensive scheme and continues to impress the coaching staff ahead of the opener against Texas A&M. Linebacker Jack Kiser is a seasoned veteran on Notre Dame's defense. Last season, Kiser finished with 62 total tackles, including 41 solo, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one interception. He's a jack of all trades for the Fighting Irish, made evident by his versatility shown in 2023. Among his 354 snaps in 2023, Kiser lined up 39 times at defensive end, 30 times over the slot receiver, 12 times at cornerback (goal line) and another 39 times at outside linebacker.

Kiser will enter his final season in South Bend with high expectations and the undisputed leader of Notre Dame's linebacker group. Kiser is expected to play the weakside linebacker, a position often referred to as the "Will", in the Fighting Irish's base defense. He's expected to play alongside Drayk Bowen, a sophomore who recorded just eight tackles for Notre Dame last season. Kiser's experience and leadership acumen will be needed for the Fighting Irish to make a deep run in 2024. Find out more about Mike Denbrock's new offense at Irish Illustrated .
