After a decade of fans, alumni and players saying, "Texas is back," the Texas Longhorns football program is back to being a contender. The Horns made their first College Football Playoff and saw Quinn Ewers emerge as a star as they enter their debut season in the SEC. The road to another playoffs will only get tougher in the nation's best conference, but that road has already begun at Texas football practice. Coach Steve Sarkisian has improved Texas' win total in each season at the helm, and the 2024 Texas Longhorns have the goal of improving upon last year's loss in the CFP Semifinal.

If Ewers regresses or gets hurt, as he's done each of the last two years, then Arch Manning is waiting in the wings. Depth is a strength of the Texas football roster as it landed the No. 5 incoming class for 2024, with 25 new players rated as four-stars or above. It's Sarkisian's job to integrate all of this new talent with the returnees during these Texas football practices. Top Texas Longhorns practice storylines

One of the major storylines revolving around Texas football is the running back position and the bad luck of injuries that have afflicted the RBs. It started last year when Jonathan Brooks -- now in the NFL -- tore his ACL late in the season. Then, CJ Baxter, the team's leading returning rusher suffered a season-ending knee injury of his own earlier this month. Just one week later, Christian Clark, a three-star incoming freshman tore his Achilles and is done for the season.

That leaves junior Jaydon Blue as the only RB on the roster with more than 12 college carries. Blue was third-string last year but is now the presumed starter, although he'll have competition for carries. Freshman Jerrick Gibson is a four-star who is the No. 3 running back in the Class of 2024. Whether or not Gibson can unseat the veteran in Blue will be something to monitor during Texas football camp as the ground game is a big part of the Longhorns offense, with the team ranking in the top 20 nationally in rushing yards last year. Another one of the Texas football headlines surrounds the Longhorns tight ends. Texas brought in a significant reinforcement in Alabama transfer Amari Niblack and the 6-foot-4 tight end could assume an immediate impact role in the passing game. Texas used its top tight end in the passing game often last year, resulting in Ja'Tavion Sanders being selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. Sanders was third in receptions (45) and receiving yards (682).

Gunnar Helm enters his fourth year in Texas, so he has the experience advantage in the Steve Sarkisian offense over Niblack. Helm is a similar big-body tight end at 6-foot-5, 231 pounds. Helm and Sanders played an identical 856 snaps last season as Sarkisian loves running two tight-end sets. Helm only had 14 receptions last season, significantly fewer than Sanders, but Niblack and Helm could complement each other at the position in similar ways this fall.
