Few programs in college football are as polarizing as the Colorado Buffaloes. Led by Hall of Fame cornerback-turned-head coach Deion Sanders, the Buffs will enter the 2024 college football schedule with postseason aspirations for the first time in several years. The 2024 Colorado football roster returns two of the best players in the country, quarterback Shedeur Sanders and two-way superstar Travis Hunter. Both players are being touted as potential Heisman Trophy candidates.

After posting a 4-8 overall record in his first season on the job, Coach Prime overhauled his roster for the second straight year, adding 55 new scholarship players. With so many new names on the Colorado football depth chart, there will be several position battles that will be settled during Colorado football fall camp that will ultimately shape the Buffs' 2024 season. Priority No. 1 for Coach Prime and his staff this offseason was getting better on the offensive line. Shedeur Sanders was the most-sacked quarterback in the FBS in 2023, and every starting offensive lineman from last season either transferred or graduated. While the Buffs added 12 new offensive lineman during the offseason (three from the high school and junior college ranks, and 9 transfers), that didn't stop Coach Prime from continuing to bolster the group.

Colorado once again turned to the Transfer Portal to land former LSU and Florida A&M offensive lineman Kardell Thomas. Thomas was a top-100 recruit in the 2019 recruiting class, but injuries kept his career from really taking off at LSU. "I'm a guy they need in the room," Thomas told BuffStampede. "I can come in with my experience and really shake the world up again. (Offensive line) coach (Phil Loadholt) talked to me and said he watched my FAMU and LSU film and felt they could develop me for the NFL. There are many, many years of NFL coaching on this staff. They run it like an NFL team. These months of being on this team will make it easy for me when I'm ready to take that NFL route. They can tell you everything before you get there." Another priority for the Buffs this offseason was improving the team's defensive line. Colorado struggled to get a consistent pass rush and hold up against the run up front in 2023, so Coach Prime overhauled his staff and personnel to address the issue. CU added four-star high school recruit Brandon Davis-Swain, and coveted transfers Dayon Hayes (Pitt), BJ Green (Arizona State), Quency Wiggins (LSU), and Samuel Okunlola (Pitt), but the most impactful new member of the Buffs' defensive line room may ultimately be Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp.

Sapp is listed as a senior quality control coach for the defense, assisting defensive line coach Damione Lewis and outside linebackers coach Vincent Dancy. "We are developing some depth right now. We got five ends that'll rush. I tell them, 'We got five ends on a two lane highway so y'all better fight for those reps.' Because they are going to go fast. We are just building depth. We want the guys to be nice and solid because the one thing I did see last year before I turned the TV off was we couldn't stop the run and that won't happen with me. No. We are going to earn our right to rush by stopping the run," Sapp told BuffStampede. Get the latest updates on the Colorado running back competition at BuffStampede .
