The second ranked vs. ranked matchup on the Week 2 college football schedule will take place on Saturday night when No. 14 Tennessee (1-0) faces No. 24 NC State (1-0) in the 2024 Duke's Mayo Classic. Tennessee got off to a fantastic start last week, cruising to a 69-3 win over Charlotte in its home opener. NC State also picked up a win in its opener, beating Western Carolina in a 38-21 final. This is the first meeting between these teams since 2012, when Tennessee picked up a 35-21 win.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. The Volunteers are 9-point favorites, per SportsLine consensus, in the latest NC State vs. Tennessee odds. Why NC State can cover

NC State might not have covered the spread in its Week 1 win over Western Carolina, but it closed the game with a dominant fourth quarter. Running back Jordan Waters rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, including a 50-yard run. Sophomore wide receiver Kevin Concepcion had a huge performance, catching nine passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns.

Former Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall has thrown for more than 10,000 yards and 91 touchdowns during his impressive college career, so he gives NC State a proven signal caller under center. He completed 26 of 40 passes for 318 yards and three scores against the Catamounts. The Wolfpack are 11-4 in their last 15 games in Week 2, and they covered the spread in five of their final seven games last season. See which team to pick here.

    Why Tennessee can cover

Tennessee had the 41-point spread covered in the first half against Chattanooga last week, and that 45-0 halftime lead allowed head coach Josh Heupel to rest his starters in the second half. Freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava threw for 314 yards in the first half, which were the most passing yards in a half in school history. He completed 22 of 28 passes and racked up three touchdown passes, while senior wide receiver Dont'e Thornton Jr . caught three passes for 105 yards and two scores.

Senior wide receiver Bru McCoy added six catches for 89 yards as he returned from a season-ending injury last year. They are facing an NC State secondary that is playing without starting safety Devan Boykin , who continues to recover from a knee injury he suffered last season. Tennessee has covered in seven of its last nine games as a favorite, and NC State is just 1-9 in its last 10 games against SEC teams. See which team to pick here.
