Driver who fled after hitting broke down trucker caught after weeks

A truck driver who fled the scene of a fatal wreck with a broken down trucker was arrested Thursday after evading police for weeks.

53-year-old John A. Dailey was booked into the Allen County, Indiana jail on Thursday, August 8th after a July 25th wreck on Interstate 69 near Union Chapel Road.

According to WANE , 48-year-old Brad Nacio was standing beside his broken down semi truck on the side of I-69 just before 2:30 a.m. wearing a yellow vest when he was struck by an oncoming semi truck driven by Dailey. Dailey then fled the scene of the accident. Nacio’s body was found in the roadway at around 3 a.m. after being hit several more times.

Police used dash cam footage, tips from witnesses, and evidence from the scene to determine that the culprit was likely driving a marron Volvo and was now missing a mirror on the passenger side. A short time later, the suspected commercial vehicle was spotted on I-69 northwest of Muncie, allowing police to determine that the driver owned the rig and was driving for a trucking company based in New York.

Police soon obtained dash cam footage from the trucking company which reportedly showed Nacio being hit and Dailey driving away.

On July 29th, officers once again spotted the rig in southern Indiana with a new mirror on the passenger side. On August 1st, officers located the trailer that Dailey was driving at the time of the wreck and found “possible body fluid” on the outside.

The trucking company then informed officers that Dailey had been fired for his alleged involvement in the crash, but that he had denied his involvement. Dailey was arrested on August 8th and is being charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash, reckless homicide, and obstruction of justice in connection to the hit-and-run.
