Woman dies after tree falls on Northwest Indiana home during severe storms
CHICAGO (CBS) — A woman was killed after a tree fell on a home during severe storms near Cedar Lake, Indiana, Monday night. The National Weather Service reported at least ten tornadoes on the ground Monday night as dangerous storms hit the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana for a second night. Lake County officials responded to the home at 8902 W. 141st Lane, in a heavily wooded area, around 10:20 p.m. According to the Lake County Coroner's Office, the victim was identified as 44-year-old Laura Nagel. On Sunday, July 14, Lake County Parks and Recreation hosted its Music and Baseball event at Deep River County Park. The Legacy Foundation, a Lake County-based community enrichment foundation, sponsored a concert by the South Shore Brass Band. Assembled in front of Deep River County Park’s gazebo, the band offered up a varied selection of toe-tapping tunes. Attendees then headed over to the park’s very own Grinder Field to watch the Deep River Grinders and Danville, Illinois’ Vermillion Voles face off in a 1858-style vintage baseball game. Attendees of all ages enjoyed hot dogs, cookies, and ice-cold Sioux City Sarsaparilla, a Deep River County Park special.

Thunderstorms and severe weather covered large swaths of the Midwest under a blanket of heavy rain Tuesday morning, leaving thousands of Hoosiers without electricity. As of 9 a.m., upwards of 5,500 AES customers and roughly 600 Duke Energy customers were without power in the Indianapolis area, concentrated mostly in the northeast side of the city.
