"O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain," The beginning words of a song most children are taught early in school. Katherine Lee Bates was a teacher in Massachusetts, and in the summer of 1893, she traveled across the United States. In Chicago, she saw a beautiful model city, a "vision of tomorrow." In Colorado, she stood on Pike's Peak and saw the purple haze on the Rocky Mountains, the Colorado plains and the grain fields in Kansas and Nebraska. Words formed in her mind, and she went back to her hotel and wrote the words to "America the Beautiful." She later stated, "The city made such a strong appeal to the patriotic feeling," but she also recognized that America needed the hand of God to guide her to greatness. She included those thoughts in her writing, but didn't consider it for publication. Ten years later, she submitted her poem to a newspaper editor in Boston, and it was published November 19, 1904. It was well received, and several editors searched hymn books for a melody, but nothing worked. Finally, someone found music that had been written ten years before the poem. The creator, Sam Ward, had died, but his widow gave permission to use the melody. The song was published in 1912, and during World War I, it bounded together a weary nation. "America the Beautiful" gave musical testimony to the national motto, "One nation under God."
