CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — New Illinois cornerback Terrance Brooks had plenty of choices in the transfer portal after two years at Texas. Dozens of big time programs wanted the former four-star, Top 100 recruit to join their program but in the end, Brooks relied on some advice from dad in helping him made a decision.

“My pops was like, ‘Yeah man, Illinois, you’ve got to check them out,'” Brooks said Wednesday in his first media availability at Illinois. “And I was like, ‘Man, Illinois? I’ve got USC hitting me up, Texas,’ And so when I saw that I was like, ‘Okay, I’m going to give these people a chance,’ and once I gave them a chance I was like, ‘Okay, I really love Illinois.'”

Thanks to his dad, the Illini get a guy with College Football Playoff experience and a new leader in the cornerback room with winning success. Brooks started 13 games for the Longhorns on their way to a Big 12 championship. His 20 tackles and career high three interceptions earned him All-Big 12 Team honorable mention.

Brooks will make his Illinois debut on Thursday Aug. 29 when the Illini host Eastern Illinois to start the season.
