The Chandler Police Department announced Tuesday it's cracking down on vendors selling illegal fireworks within city limits.

In a news release, Chandler Police said Friday, June 28, they were able to identify a man selling illegal fireworks near his stand located along Alma School Road.

Police ended up confiscating almost $10,000 worth of illegal fireworks.

Chandler Police reminds the public to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday safely and legally. "We want everyone to have a great week celebrating the Fourth of July," Chandler Police spokesperson Sgt. Ricky Gonzales said in the release. "We don’t want to ruin anyone’s fun, but we want you to do it in a safe manner.” Gonzales said the vendor was cited for a violation of Chandler Code 28-23, which can result in a maximum fine of $1,000. Also, the vendor forfeited the product seized. "At the time of the investigation, the vendor's business license was not affected by the citation, as they cooperated fully with police during contact," Gonzales said. Illegal fireworks include anything that explodes or leaves the ground and launches into the air, police said. These fireworks can be attributed to property damage, structure and field fires, severe burn injuries, and other accidents. The use of permissible consumer fireworks is allowed on private property -- with the permission of the property owner -- from June 24 through July 6. Chandler prohibits the use of permissible consumer fireworks in any public park. If you are having a pool party, assign a responsible adult or two to keep an eye on children. Designate a sober driver or have plans to use a rideshare or taxi if alcohol consumption will be a part of your celebrations. For those who choose to celebrate with legal fireworks, Chandler Police asks them to follow these tips to ensure a safe holiday:
    • Always have a nearby water source ready.
    • Never allow children to use lighters.
    • Be mindful of pets who may get scared. Keep them indoors or otherwise secured.
    • Be aware of your surroundings.
