CHANNAHON, Ill. — ComEd and state police provided an update Wednesday on I-55 near Channahon and said the interstate will be cleared by early Thursday morning.

Northbound traffic on I-55 in Will County is being diverted at River Road with southbound being diverted at U.S. 6.

ComEd said they have deployed numerous heavy equipment and 16 bulldozers and will have the expressway cleared by midnight. Then, state police and other officials need “an hour or two” to work to complete it.

Police were called to the scene just after 9:20 p.m. Monday and found downed power lines and a crash. Five vehicles, including two semi trucks, were involved. Two people suffered minor injuries.

Powerful storms slammed the Chicago area Monday evening with 11 confirmed tornados.

The utility company also stated that more than 80 percent of power has been restored throughout Chicago and the Illinois collar counties.
