MADISON, Wis. -- The Madison Fire Department said Saturday it is investigating the cause of a fire that left two households without a home overnight.

The MFD said it responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a fire in a duplex on Turbot Drive. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with heavy fire coming out of the front door. Additional fire was found on the back side of the residence, which also spread to the second floor.

Fire crews attacked the fire from multiple locations, said the MFD, and extinguished it close to midnight. Overhaul continued for some time after, and firefighters continued to cool down hot spots for several hours. Witnesses reported that all occupants, including one dog, escaped safely. Firefighters performed search and rescue and confirmed there was no one in the home.

The MFD said the residence where the fire occurred suffered major damage to both floors. The unit next door was impacted by smoke and shutdown of utilities. A total of eight people and one pet are without a home. The American Red Cross responded to assist the houseless occupants.

No injuries to occupants or firefighters were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
