UPDATE: Man arrested, woman identified in Whitewater homicide

UPDATED: The Whitewater Police Department said Saturday that it had made an arrest in the case, and identified the victim.

According to police, a 23-year-old man has been arrested. The suspect is facing first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by the use of a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct while armed charges. The man is currently being detained in the Walworth County Jail.

Police identified the victim as Kara Welsh, 21, of Plainfield, Illinois.

WHITEWATER, Wis. -- A woman was found dead in Whitewater late Friday night, and a man was detained in connection with the case.

According to the Whitewater Police Department, officers responded to an apartment home in the 100 block of W. Whitewater Street just before midnight Friday.

The officers found a 21-year-old woman dead. They observed the woman had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Police took a 23-year-old man into custody. The man was also in the apartment.

Police said an initial investigation found that leading up to the shooting, an altercation had occurred between the man and woman.

The male suspect is being held in the Walworth County Jail. He currently faces charges of First-Degree Intentional Homicide, Endangering Safety by the Use of a Dangerous Weapon, and Disorderly Conduct while Armed.
