A man killed early Wednesday morning at an apartment complex off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard has been identified, and a suspect has been charged with his murder.

Chapel Hill police responding to a 911 call found Adam Abdur-Rahman, 37, with gunshot wounds around 1:04 a.m. Wednesday outside a building near 123 Ashley Forest Road, north of downtown, according to a news release. He was taken to UNC Hospitals, where he died.

Police arrested a resident of the apartment complex later Wednesday, the release said.

Mario Chrishunn Thompson, 45, of Chapel Hill, was charged with first-degree murder and two counts of discharging a weapon into occupied property, the release said.

Thompson was taken to the Orange County Detention Center, where he is being held without bail. He is scheduled to make a first appearance in Orange County Superior Court at 2 p.m. Thursday.

The shooting at the Tyler Creek (formerly Ashley Forest) apartment complex is an “isolated incident,” police said, and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information can call 911 or the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Callers can leave anonymous tips with Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crimestoppers at 919-942-7515 or online at chapelhillcrimestoppers.com . Information that leads to an arrest could be eligible for a reward up to $2,000.

Other people shot, police calls to Ashley Forest

Chapel Hill police investigated two shooting deaths across town in 2023, and four shootings so far this year, including a murder-suicide involving a father and his daughter at a Homestead Road apartment complex in June and two cases in which the victims survived, according to spokesman Alex Carrasquillo.

There have been no other calls to police for the address where Wednesday’s shooting victim was found, Carrasquillo said, but the department’s online records show officers responded to Tyler Creek (Ashley Forest) apartments at least 130 times in the last year.

Those calls included several assaults, thefts and domestic violence incidents, the records show. Six calls were for shots being fired and at least one assault with a deadly weapon case, in which someone reported being hit with a car door, records show.

Two Tyler Creek residents were killed in the past, including a 25-year-old man who was shot and killed in that same part of the complex just over two years ago.

    ▪ Elyjah Smith, an employee of Planet Fitness in Chapel Hill, was shot in the 100 block of Ashley Forest Road on July 11, 2022. Smith died from his injuries at UNC Hospitals on July 22, 2022.

Police charged a Charlotte resident, 27-year-old Kemonnie Eason, with first-degree murder in his death. Eason is still awaiting trial in the Orange County Detention Center.

    ▪ Another man was sentenced in 2014 for the murder of then-Ashley Forest resident Drew Frasure in December 2011. Frasure, 41, was killed at his apartment in the 100 block of Ashley Forest Road over a drug deal dispute, court records show.

Mario Dante Ramsey is now serving 30 to 37 years in prison for second-degree murder in that case.
