Three Charles County swimmers were able to lock in their spots in an upcoming meet featuring the best of the best.

Smallwood Village swimmer Amanda Cartwright secured her spot last weekend for the Prince-Mont All-Stars, her last swim meet before she begins swimming for St. Mary’s College of Maryland in the fall.

During the Prince-Mont League Division C Championship on July 20, Cartwright swam second in the 15-18 girls’ 100-meter freestyle, so she will compete in the league’s All-Stars meet on July 27.

“The fact that I made it [to All-Stars] is my goal,” Cartwright said.

The swimmer said at the beginning of the summer she was swimming her freestyle in 1 minute and 12 seconds, but since then, she has cut her time to 1 minute, 7.66 seconds. Cartwright said she would like to cut her time for this event by two more seconds.

“Maybe it’s unrealistic, but that was my goal at the beginning of the summer,” Cartwright said.

Cartwright, a recent graduate of Thomas Stone High School, is going to St. Mary’s College in the fall to study psychology and Spanish.

“I'm excited to go to college close to home,” Cartwright said. “I'm just excited to be somewhere new.”

Cartwright also won her heat in the 15-18 girls’ 100-meter individual medley and placed fifth overall for that event. Throughout the summer, Cartwright is a lifeguard and teaches swim lessons.

“I really enjoy swimming. It's a really stressful sport … but I do think I find a lot of joy and fun in literally just swimming,” Cartwright said.

Indian Head swimmer Carolina Walter, a rising senior at Henry E. Lackey High School, finished second in the 15-18 girls’ 50-meter backstroke last Saturday, securing her spot at All-Stars before she starts her senior year.

“At this point, I just want to drop a few more seconds,” Walter said.

Walter, 17, swims at Lackey High School during the winter sports season where her mom, a geometry teacher, is one of the coaches.

One of Walter's goals for her senior year is to get on Lackey High School’s record board for swimming. She said she is only seconds away from beating the backstroke record that is currently posted on the board.

Walter, also currently enrolled in Charles County's Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute program, said she planned on looking into paramedic programs in the future and potentially after high school.

She also placed third in the 15-18 girls’ 100 IM during the championships last weekend.

Indian Head swimmer Naomi Dugan easily secured her spot in All-Stars when she won the 15-18 girls’ 100 IM, the 15-18 girls’ 50-meter breaststroke and the 15-18 girls’ 100 free.

Dugan said she is excited for All-Stars and like the other swimmers, this will be her last swimming event of the summer.

“I think I have breaststroke for first, but I’m going to try and get first in IM too,” Dugan said.

Dugan, 18, was homeschooled and said she does not yet know what her plans are following graduation.
