Lowcountry swim school making waves with special lessons for autistic children
HANAHAN, S.C. (WCIV) — Children with autism are 160 times more likely to experience drowning compared to their peers, according to the autism society. One couple in the Lowcountry is trying to change those statistics by making waves with special swim lessons. Tara Girch ran an aquatics program in Maryland when she noticed children with special needs and disabilities needed individual attention during lessons. That inspired Tara and her husband to start MarTar Swim School in 1999. The couple are now helping Lowcountry kids learn to swim at their own pace.
