CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – They’ve fought to protect and serve our country, and now it’s their communities’ turn to serve them by helping veterans find work after their military service.

Thursday, July 25 marks “National Hire a Veteran Day.” The day plays an important role in helping bring awareness to veterans in the workforce.

Hundreds of thousands of military service members either retire or separate from the armed forces every year and make the transition into civilian life. That transition can often be a challenge for our veterans.

The sole purpose of National Hire a Veteran Day is to remind employers across the country that veterans have skills that can be useful in the workforce. Capitol One Senior Director Carl Ciovacco says veterans can often help build trust within a workplace.

“Veterans have incredible soft skills. Veterans are natural leaders. They know how to build trust and inspire teamwork. And I’ve hired quite a few veterans myself and been very happy,” Ciovacco said.

In addition to the many skills veterans bring to the table, they also work well in groups and provide vital leadership. Hiring a veteran could also lead to various tax credits for employers.
