MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Former inmates in the Charlotte area can now take advantage of a new re-entry monthly stipend pilot program in Mecklenburg County to help them land on their feet.

A monthly stipend of up to $600 spanning one year will be offered to 60 former inmates, Mecklenburg County Criminal Justice Services said.

“We are excited to implement this pilot program and see how the initiative helps those residents,” Criminal Justice Services Director Sonya L. Harper said. “When you work with the reentry population, we know there are barriers to success. These are people looking for a new start and Mecklenburg County is here to help.”

The Mecklenburg County Commissioners previously set aside $500,000 for the program and launched the program as an effort to curb inequity.

The program was launched on July 1.
