    Taj Gibson.

The Charlotte Hornets changed hands during the 2023-24 NBA season. A $3 billion sale saw Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall secure majority ownership in the franchise. Since then, many changes have occurred within the front office and the coaching staff.

Most notable were the additions of Charles Lee as the new head coach and Jeff Peterson as the new Vice President of Basketball Operations. Peterson's first significant move saw the Hornets secure Grant Williams in a trade with the Dallas Mavericks at the Feb. 8 trade deadline.

With all the happenings in Charlotte, it's easy to overlook that this is the first summer under new ownership, but the change in approach is clear for all to see. Suddenly, the Hornets are making smart decisions in the free-agent market. They have acquired three veterans in free agency to balance a young and developing roster.

Taj Gibson is the latest addition. Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the veteran forward has agreed to a one-year deal with the team. Guard Reggie Jackson has also moved to South Carolina. Furthermore, Peterson found a way to get involved in a mega six-team sign-and-trade that sent Klay Thompson to the Mavericks, with highly-rated shooting guard Josh Green being sent to the Hornets.

Charlotte has missed the playoffs for eight consecutive seasons. Years of mismanagement and poor roster decisions have left the franchise mired in mediocracy. However, the new ownership group appears to approach things calmly and collectedly. They haven't swung for the fences in the trade market.

Instead, they've brought in a young head coach who has won two championship rings as an assistant. They've added high-character players to bolster leadership in the locker room. With several young, high-potential talents on the roster, they seem to be focusing on internal development.

Charlotte is unlikely to crack the playoffs next season. Still, if the front office can remain patient and continue making smart decisions, it won't be long before LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller compete on the NBA's biggest stage.
