After an 11-year hiatus, EA Sports is finally releasing a new version of its college football video game. It features all 134 NCAA D1 FBS schools, with more than 1,000 real-life players on the roster.
Mayes is one of them.
“Like they had my dreads look accurate coming out the back. My end game drip, like the sleeves that I wear,” he said. “It’s just kind of special to see what you do and now you can see other people play as yourself.”
Besides a graphics upgrade, among the biggest changes since the game last came out was the policy allowing college athletes to benefit from their name, image and likeness. Being identified by name in the video game is part of that.
“I have like an EA ranking,” Mayes said. “It’s just really cool stuff and it is really nice to be a part of.”
“Being able to play yourself in a game… what do you expect that feeling to be like?” Queen City News asked Mayes.
Charlotte O-lineman Mitchell Mayes says he would be excited for the game release regardless of whether he was paid. But it’s a nice bonus to have.
“I’m ready to see myself on the field, so I am extremely excited. I think it is a very big deal and I can’t wait until the game comes out,” he said.
Fans who grew up playing college football games have been waiting for this day for years. Just talking about it sparks childhood memories for some users.
“I remember me and my cousin having hour-long games or even more because it was just us going at it. It was just some of the greatest times,” said Javaris Harris, video game enthusiast and co-host of College Couch Podcast.
Between the game’s graphics, real-life details, and playing option, he says it is bound to be one of the greatest games of all time.
“Just pretty much everything that a college football fan would want to see in a game or just sitting in front on your couch on a Saturday,” Harris said. “All of that is probably going to be included in this game.”
College players who opted-in receive $600 and a free game.
“People were OK with the game coming out without even being compensated because people were just really excited for the game,” Mayes said. “It’s honestly just a blessing of opportunity to be able to get compensated, get the free copy, and be in the game. It’s something to be very grateful for.”
The deluxe version was released at 4 p.m. on Monday. The standard version comes out Friday.
