    Charlotte Airport flights stalled, global tech outage impacting city and state services

    CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – An overnight global tech outage is severely impacting flights at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and causing widespread outages to city and state services and several other industries including banks and healthcare services.

    CHARLOTTE AIRPORT LATEST

    The FAA issued a ground delay around 8 a.m. at Charlotte Airport and several other airports around the U.S. That delay has since been lifted are some flights are now departing and coming into Charlotte.

    More than 200 flights coming in and nearly 200 flights going out had been either delayed or canceled Friday morning in Charlotte, according to Flight Aware . Charlotte Airport said travelers should contact airlines directly and told travelers to avoid the airport until the issues are resolved.

    Spirit Airlines said around 9 a.m. that they were unable to rebook any travelers in light of the outage. American Airlines said that “a technical issue with a vendor impacted multiple carriers, including American.” American later said they’d be issuing flight vouchers.

    Delta announced around 6:45 a.m. that they were pausing all global flights until the issue was resolved. They have since announced that some flights were resuming.

    The FAA announced Friday morning that they’d be “assisting several airlines until the issue is resolved.”

    Several airports around the U.S. including New York’s Laguardia and Boston’s Logan airports are completely closed .

    WHAT ELSE IS IMPACTED

    CATS said its website was down and was directing customers to the app or call 704-336-7433. The city’s website was also down. NCDOT and DMV offices were also being affected, the departments confirmed.

    Atrium Health said its internet and phone system were operating normally and that they “are closely monitoring the global CrowdStrike outage and are working diligently to minimize disruption to our patients.”

    Charlotte Medic and CMPD said 911 was operating normally.

    Globally, a Polish shipping hub, the Washington D.C Metro system, and the UK’s National Health Services have all been affected.

    HOW IT HAPPENED

    The problem began when a global overnight tech outage was reported by Microsoft. The issue was affecting Microsoft services, who says they are ‘gradually fixing the problem.’

    LIVE UPDATES

    The website DownDectector, which tracks user-reported internet outages, recorded growing outages in services at Visa, ADT security and Amazon, and airlines including American Airlines and Delta.

    The global outage could be related to a cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, which said a defect security tool update may have been the reason for the outage.
