Cam Newton gave Bryce Young a tip that may save his career

Bryce Young knows he has to be better heading into his second season. That is why he appears willing to tap into all the resources available.

As veterans arrived at training camp Tuesday, Young told reporters that Panthers legend and 2015 MVP Cam Newton has made himself available as a resource for guidance. It turns out, the extra guidance has meant a lot to Young.

"Just to persevere," Young said of what Newton told him when they spoke. "You want to be invested in where you are and where your feet are and be there. Know that through ups and downs, keep working."

Carolina isn't thinking of playoff expectations heading into the 2024 season. Instead, the franchise has stressed taking a more patient approach – something it hasn't done during the David Tepper tenure.

Still, much of the Panthers' success is riding on Young playing better than the NFL’s lowest-rated passer and the second-lowest completion percentage, which he was during his rookie season.

To help alleviate those concerns, Carolina invested in players like Damien Lewis and Robert Hunt on the offensive line, while moving Austin Corbett to center. In the passing game, Dan Morgan added Diontae Johnson and Xavier Legette to give Young targets. Meanwhile, newly minted head coach Dave Canales is looking to establish the run with Carolina's carousel of running backs.

Evident in the Panthers' approach is a belief that Young will bounce back in year two.

“I love Bryce,” Morgan said, via The Athletic. "I felt very highly of him when we drafted him. I think Bryce is one of the hardest-working men in that locker room right now. I know he’s on a mission. I know he’s committed to being great. I know he’s committed to this franchise and making this franchise great.

“We’re gonna try to do everything we can in our power to surround him with the best players, the best protection, receivers, running backs. So we’ve gotta do our part as well. I know Bryce is hungry, he’s focused and we’re super excited about him.”

If Young's lessons with Newton don't work out, the franchise will inevitably have to change directions. It wouldn't be a first.

But everyone involved is hoping it doesn't ever get to that point. At least that is the narrative heading into training camp.

"I think that for me, there's always an urgency, there's always a sense of wanting to be the best I can be, the best we can be every day," Young said. "That's definitely something I don't want to lose."
