PINEVILLE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Monday afternoon, a woman jogging along Little Sugar Creek Greenway in Pineville called 911 after she says a man grabbed her, slammed her to the ground and pinned her down.

She was able to break free and run toward bicyclists for help.

Within seconds of receiving the call, police were putting the suspect in handcuffs.

They say his name is Tyrone Duncan, and he now faces charges of assault and possession of methamphetamine.

“That’s surprising because I thought this was a very civilized greenway,” said greenway walker Boris Budagyan.

Last October, the county announced they were installing these 911 location signs on greenway mile markers so if someone needs help, they can give police an accurate location.

This greenway has mile markers, but Queen City News has learned the victim didn’t use them when calling the police. Furthermore, we learned that not everyone sees them.

“I guess I’ve noticed it,” said walker Sarah Aman, “I just never paid close attention. Like, I’ve never been, ‘Oh, this is mile marker number three.'”

The installation of the markers was supposed to take until the end of this year to complete. The county says phase one of updating mile markers with location information is complete, and phase two of moving some mile markers and adding new ones should be done in the fall.

For now, walkers who have heard of the assault are planning to take extra precautions themselves.

“I definitely will be really watching out even more,” said Aman, “and maybe grabbing a friend to come along with me.”
