The most important number for No. 9 in 2024 may be 2.7.

Carolina Panthers quarterback and birthday boy Bryce Young talked with reporters following his team’s second outing of training camp on Thursday. Young was asked if he thinks he’s been getting the ball out quickly enough, which will be a key component to the new offense.

“Yeah, I think there’s good reps and there’s reps I can do better at,” he replied. “I’m a competitor. I wanna be perfect in every rep in practice and every rep in the game. But obviously, it’s not gonna happen. It’s a new system, we had time in OTAs and I think we’re farther along there than we are. I feel like I have a better understanding than I did. But I’m still pushing that urgency to do that.”

Head coach Dave Canales told media members earlier this offseason that he hopes to install a 2.7 seconds or less offense—a methodical and quick-hitting approach in which Young can get the ball out in (you guessed it) 2.7 seconds or less.

Young was then asked about that balancing number with the improvisational aspects of running an offense.

“Yeah, just take the coaching and understanding what our philosophy is, what we’re trying to do,” he said. “But one part—what Coach Canales and all the coaches say—is making sure that that be our mindset, but we’re able to play free and we’re able to react.”

Well, for the rest of the day, Young can focus and react to another new number—23.

    Happy birthday, Bryce!
