For depth, the Carolina Panthers added a wide receiver head coach Dave Canales knows well.

The team signed wide receiver Deven Thompkins after a workout Thursday, according to the team website .

Thompkins last played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the previous two seasons, overlapping with Canales' tenure as the offensive coordinator.

He is a former undrafted player out of Utah State.

Thompkins is a smaller wide receiver. He stands 5-foot-8, 155 pounds. In 22 games in Tampa Bay, he caught 22 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown for the Bucs in 22 games the last two seasons.

To make room for the move on the roster, Carolina cut injured rookie defensive lineman Popo Aumavae.

Thompkins' most productive days came while he was in college, where he caught 102 passes for 1,704 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior.

If he makes the Panthers' final roster, he could be a solid special teams contributor and depth receiver.
