Massive sinkhole opens up near Bank of America Stadium

Crews are working to repair a massive sinkhole that opened near Bank of America Stadium Tuesday morning.

The hole appears to have affected two lanes of South Cedar Street near West Morehead Street.

A Channel 9 crew was at the scene when part of the hole collapsed even more, moments after a worker walked by.

Charlotte Water said it was a “water leak undermining South Cedar Street near Morehead Street” and asked drivers to avoid the area.

“CDOT is putting an emergency closure into our interactive closure map so that WAZE can help motorists navigate around the work at that location,” a spokesperson said.

Water was restored Tuesday night to the area, but the road remained close until further notice.

While Vee Davis was watching the Panthers practice, the hole was growing.

“I’ve never seen this before, ever,” she said. That’s why I thought it was cool enough for me to get out, get the video and everything.”

She left the Panthers practice Tuesday morning and drove right up to the hole before it was blocked off.

“They were just waving us off the road. So then I had parked my car and got out it was just a big hole,” she said.

Mohamed Kambe was inside the building next door when it happened.

“Yes, it was scary. It was scary. But I’m glad nobody’s hurt, that would be terrible,” he said.

Kambe hopes to open a sports bar in his building before the Panthers season begins. While the road closure slowed some work down Tuesday, he hopes it doesn’t go farther than that.

“Definitely the wrong time for this to be happening,” he said.

Kambe said a lot of water was coming out of the street Monday but he was told it was storm water.
